Your products are amazing. Your website looks great. But behind the scenes, your Shopify settings might be quietly driving customers away without you even realizing it.
In 2024, e-commerce brands lost approximately $18 billion due to cart abandonment, with 22% of shoppers abandoning their purchases because of long or complicated checkout processes. If your sales aren’t where you want them to be, it might not be your products or marketing—it could be simple tech settings that are creating unnecessary friction for customers.
Here are three common mistakes Shopify store owners make—and how to fix them right now to stop losing sales.
1. You're on the Shop App... but You're Making It Hard for People to Follow You
The Shop App is a fantastic tool for customers to track orders and discover new brands. But if you don’t have “Follow on Shop” enabled in your store’s footer, you’re making it way harder for people to keep up with your business.
Instead of a simple one-click follow, customers have to search for your store manually inside the app—assuming they even remember to do it. Most won’t bother.
How to Fix It:
Go to Shopify Admin > Settings > Shop Sales Channel
Click Customize
Enable Follow on Shop in your footer
That’s it. Now, every visitor to your store can follow you in one click, keeping your brand in their feed and making it easier for them to shop with you again.
2. Some of Your Products Aren't Available on Every Sales Channel
If you're selling through Instagram, Facebook, or the Shop App, but not all of your products are showing up there, you're unintentionally hiding inventory from potential buyers.
Let’s say a customer is browsing your store on Instagram and finds a product they love. But if that item isn’t synced to Instagram Shopping, they won’t be able to buy it in-app. Instead, they’ll have to leave Instagram, open your website, and search for it all over again.
Spoiler: Most people won’t do that.
How to Fix It:
Go to Shopify Admin > Products
Click Bulk Edit
Select Sales Channels and ensure all your products are available on all your connected platforms (Shop, Instagram, Facebook, etc.)
The easier you make it for customers to buy wherever they are, the more sales you’ll close.
3. Your Checkout Experience is Inconsistent Across Platforms
Imagine a customer finds your store on the Shop App and fills their cart. But when they go to checkout, they get a message saying the product isn’t available on this platform and they need to start over on your website.
What do you think happens next? They leave. You just lost a sale.
Customers expect a seamless experience. If they start shopping on the Shop App or Instagram, they should be able to finish their purchase there—not be forced to restart somewhere else.
Spoiler: Most people won’t do that.
How to Fix It:
Test your checkout flow on every sales channel where you sell
Ensure all products are synced and available for checkout across platforms
Offer multiple payment options so customers can pay how they prefer (credit card, PayPal, Shop Pay, etc.)
Bottom Line: Every Extra Click = Lost Sales
Your store might look perfect, but behind-the-scenes friction could be costing you real money every day. The good news? These fixes are quick, easy, and can immediately improve your customer experience (and your revenue).
